Thank You Hollidaysburg Rotary Club
Many thanks to the Hollidaysburg Rotary Club for their ongoing
support and effort they contribute to giving back to the community.
This season, they collected toys and 325 lbs of groceries and awarded
us with a toal of $1,400.00 towards the expenses of the American Rescue
Workers Hollidaysburg, PA. We are so grateful to these faithful
organizations that strive to make the difference. Their efforts
will go a long way to help feed the community and make life a little
merrier this Christmas season!
Red Lobster in Altoona Spreads Christmas Cheer!
The employees of the Red Lobster Restaurant in Altoona, PA got together and
adopted some underprivileged kids for Christmas! They went above and beyond
spreading Christmas joy! What a wonderful Christmas they provided for those children.
It is people we meet every day in our lives that end up making a difference.
We are grateful to the community who even though they may be struggling some with
the economy, they still make the sacrifice to give to others. My hats are off to
these employees and the other folks that reach out in so many simple and complex
ways to make other’s lives easier. We are so blessed to have such a caring community.
I don’t know about you all, but I plan on making Red Lobster one of my more frequent stops from now on!
Eagle Scout performs volunteer project at the American Rescue Workers
Eagle Scout Mike Recker (a senior from Hollidaysburg Area High School) made his volunteer project at the American Rescue Workers this year. Our lobby at 502 Mulberry was in rough shape so Mike came over to take a look. Not only were the floors cracked and the finish gone but the room was so dark and marred that it was pretty rough looking to the first thing people saw when getting services there. No matter how we cleaned, it still looked dirty. He offered to re-do the walls and replace the floors but asked if there was more that he could do. So I showed him the back porch steps that were unsafe and started to chip away. When we do functions, we are always worried about folks on these steps they were that unsafe. So his project became the lobby and fixing up the back porch.
Mike enlisted some other scouts and family and friends to help him get the job done. He raised the money to purchase or have donated paint, primer, flooring, hardware, whatever was needed. In no time the lobby looked like new! And the back porch??? Well, the steps are not only sturdy and the porch sports a new coat of paint but he even came back later with 'no skid' pads to make the stairs safe for the public to use during functions. Take time to browse our before and after pictures to see what a difference they made. This is what a high school Eagle Scout can do when he is motivated to help, what can we do as adults?
Local school kids are getting involved!
This past Christmas season, several schools did food drives for the American Rescue Workers. C.W. Longer Elementary students brought in 680 pounds of groceries! Frankstown Elementary School also participated in a food drive as well as the Hollidaysburg Area Jr. High that brought in 725 pounds of groceries for distribution. Children are learning how good it feels to help their neighbor by collecting and donating to the food pantry. Their donations will go a long way in feeding families who are struggling to make ends meet. The beauty of a giving heart is seen clearly through these children!
Winterfest 2010!!!
This year our float won first place in the Winterfest Parade! Not only did we represent the real meaning of Christmas, but we won $100 in prize money and distributed 1,200 gospel tracts, 200 collection cans and 4,000 pieces of candy! Together with the West Loop Missionary Church in Hollidaysburg we set out to reach the community with joy and truth. It was so much fun too! Thanks to all who participated and donated time and materials to this effort!
