Local Teens Making a Difference!
This past May the Hollidaysburg Area High School had a group of teens and adults do a special project at the American Rescue Workers. A phone call from Meredith Henderson revealed a school project that would include learning to write and execute grants, collect necessary materials and then complete a service project for the community. The American Rescue Workers was selected as their project and they came and re-vamped a bathroom on the second floor of the 502 Mulberry St. building that was being used for youth gatherings. The plumbing was falling apart and the bathroom was rendered un-usable until they came in and modernized it. While groups took turns working upstairs in the bathroom, the others were put to work doing a major spring cleaning in the building. Our lobby, that is used for the clothing room recipients and those needing counseling was taken apart and scrubbed from top to bottom. They took apart the chapel and put it back together gleaming! Others worked on emptying the basement of debris that was left over a long period of time and they cleaned the floors. Storage that had never been transferred to our new warehouse location was loaded on the trucks for re-location and easier distribution. They worked on preparing the garden beds for the next group coming to beautify the front of the building and they scrubbed every surface they could reach and used ladders for what they couldn't reach. This group of volunteers was not lazy; they attacked this project with such willingness to help! What a wonderful day! They had enough extra flooring to replace the floor in the kitchenette upstairs (also used for special youth projects) and then cleaning and painting followed. So much work was done in one day, it would of amazed anyone that walked through. We are so thankful for a community that supports us in so many practical ways. We want to especially thank the teachers, volunteers and teens that participated in this project, you have made a difference in this community with your time and talent!
